Running the Good Race
I like when I work out hard and get sore. I use it as proof that I’ve worked hard and accomplished something. But holy smokes, I have been sore ALL week. Sometimes to the point of nausea. Each time it gets to that point, I have emptied another water bottle and done some type of light stretching and easy movement to get the blood flowing through the aching muscles.
I know that the old Kim would have given up after the first onset of DOMS this week. “It hurts too much! I’m done!!” My first Live Fit workout was on Tuesday and by Thursday I was feeling pretty beat-up. And it seems like each day this week, I’ve just added one more area of soreness to my body. But here’s the crazy thing…each day this week, I’ve continued to add another workout. Willingly. Eagerly. Dare I say, happily?
I remember when I started this blog last summer, and many of my initial posts were about my mojo being lost, my ‘give-a-darn being busted’…and here I am today, fighting my way through Day 2 of rest, fighting because I’m chomping at the bit to get back to the gym, pondering if I could ever be a Fitness Model Competitor (wth??), scouring the webs for clean eating recipes, making the most of this summer vacation. Crazy!!
In addition to adding the weights, I’ve made a joyful return to running. Sometimes I feel ashamed that I have 9 half-marathon medals hanging on my wall, and two weeks ago I struggled to make it through one mile. But that too is a dynamic changing in my life. I have popped out of bed nearly every morning this week, thrown on my running clothes, grabbed my pooch, and hit the streets.
Surely I’m motivated because we are going ‘home’ to visit soon. Surely I’m motivated because I will be back to the classroom in two months. But mostly, right now, my motivation is coming from a desire to see just what my body can become.
Too many times I’ve started something big and gotten distracted. Too many times I’ve bitten off more than I can chew. I am hoping, praying, and needing this time to be different.
Let’s see what this girl is made of, shall we?
Ugh, that made me mad just reading it!! Lol
You should have seen me when he was telling me the recap. I was pretty angry myself! He assured me that they got the ‘necessary’ form filled out and we’re still moving out on June 29, but wow! What a process!
How’s the wrist and the knee? Get some rest and give the pups some snuggles from me!
Hubs (to rental agent in our complex): I want to make sure you got our notice to vacate.
Agent: Did you fill out the form?
Hubs: What form? We put a letter in with our rent check last month.
Agent: Oh, I got that. But you have to fill out a form. You're required to give written notice.
Hubs: I did. In the letter.
Agent: That doesn't count. You have to fill out a form.
Hubs: Did you or did you not get my letter?
Agent: I did. But you have to fill out a form.
Hubs: Did you let me know I had to fill out a form?
Agent: It says in your lease that you have to give written notice.
Hubs: I did. In a letter...which also asked if there was anything else we needed to do to please contact us. Also, the lease says we need to give written notice; it does not state we need to fill out a form.
Agent: [Redirecting] Well you can't move out on the 29th [of June] because you didn't give 60 days notice.
Hubs: The letter was dated May 1st and was turned in with our May rent. There are 31 days in May...so 31 plus the 29 days in June equals 60.
Agent: It has to be two months.
Hubs: So is it two months or 60 days?
Agent: Two months IS 60 days.
Hubs: [Exasperated] Did you or did you not get the letter on May 1st?
Agent: I did.
Hubs: Have we or have we not paid rent through June 30th?
Agent: You did.
Hubs: We're moving out on June 29th, any questions?
Agent: Yes, why are you moving??
We got up this morning and headed straight to the dog park. Long-time readers know this is a Saturday morning staple in our house. The girls seem to know exactly what day it is!!
After the dog park, we came home to make breakfast. I thought I would try something kind of new. It’s omelet day, but I also needed to clean out the fridge a little. Hubby had a steak, mushroom and cheddar omelet, and I had a shrimp, broccoli, cauliflower, orange pepper omelet. Mine was overflowing with veggies. Both were SO tasty!
Here’s to “Leftover” Omelets. YAY!
This week I embarked on a new adventure…Jamie Eason’s Live Fit. Honestly, this is the hardest I’ve worked out in quite some time. I love it!
I started the week on Tuesday with a 1 mile run. It was slow, and I wish I could say it was easy. My running partner (Bailey the Wonder Pooch) was thrilled to get to go running. She loves it! Tuesday after I taught Summer School, the husband and I hit the gym. I did Chest and Triceps.
Wednesday, I got up and ran 1.25 miles. One mile with Bailey and a quarter mile with Molly. I have to be careful with Molly because she can’t handle the heat here in Memphis very well. After school, we hit the gym and I did Back and Biceps.
Thursday, I took the morning off from running. Bailey was bummed out. But I hit the gym after school and did Legs. I love doing legs. This was a challenge for us because a thunderstorm hit just as we were leaving the house and I know the dogs were not happy to be left in the midst of a storm. I didn’t want to go, even though I was excited about doing squats, but I went anyway!
Today, I woke up and ran another 1.25 miles. It was difficult since my legs felt heavy. By the time I got to school, I was physically ill from being so sore. Lots of water, and another trip to the gym and I feel pretty good.
My eating has been vastly improved this week. I have really been conscientious about eating more whole foods, fewer sweets and fewer alcoholic beverages. This afternoon I had so much energy, I challenged the hubby to a wii bowling tournament. We had a lot of fun!!
Tomorrow, rest day. Whew! :)
Help pair service dogs with veterans
In the spirit of 1776, the year the United States gained independence, explore.org wants to help veterans gain the freedom that comes with obtaining a service dog. For every 1,000 “likes” the Dog Bless You page gets through July 4, explore.org will donate up to 76 companion and service dogs to U.S. veterans in need.

Yesterday’s workout was Jamie Eason’s back and biceps. I was a bit dismayed at the number and variety of curls, but my biceps feel pretty awesome. My chest is incredibly sore from chest work two days ago, and I really quite like it.
Today’s workout is legs. Bring on the squats! I’m not sure why, but I’ve always enjoyed squats. They make me feel like a powerhouse!!
The eating is going well. Even hubby is mostly on board. He wanted to make a marinade yesterday and I know there is a store-bought one he really likes; however, after some discussion, he chose to create a marinade with ingredients on hand. Soy, molasses, salt and pepper and a splash of whiskey. I doubt we could call it a clean, but it feels a little more wholesome than a store-bought, highly processed container of crap marinade, AND it was so tasty!!
The water intake is also going well. It’s been interesting this week as I try to teach summer school. The school has that sort-of open-concept bathroom…stalls are out of view, but sinks are practically in the hallway. The other day I was washing my hands as the students arrived…and washing my hands as the students were leaving, and one student yelled over her shoulder as she was leaving, “Mrs. K, you go to the bathroom a lot!” Oh she has no idea!! :)
